Minnesota Dance TheaterTop Dance in Minneapolis

Minnesota Dance Theater was established in 1962 by Loyce Houlton. With performances showcasing a variety of classical and contemporary dance, Minnesota Dance Theatre & School is a leading dance group in the state of Minnesota. Lise Houlton, Loyce’s daughter, has been the organization’s director since 1995. She has commissioned new pieces and drawn from a diverse repertoire of dance masterworks.

The MDT school collaborates closely with the company to offer students top-notch instruction, opportunities for performance, and guidance from company dancers. The fifty-year anniversary of its founding and the historic fifty years of Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy, regarded as the longest-running holiday arts event in Minnesota and attracting over 1.6 million spectators since 1964, are testaments to MDT’s stature as one of Minnesota’s cultural treasures.

“I was so excited and pleased to view the most recent performance over the past weekend. It was an experience that had been missing over the past year! An enormously talented group of artists.” – Christopher R.

Tapestry Folkdance CenterDance Minneapolis

Tapestry Folkdance Center began in 1983 and came out of a dance crew like Saltari Dance Emporium. Tapestry’s early years were marked by a certain amount of “nomadic” history as it moved from a high school to a lengthy residence at the Sabathani Community Center on 38th Street in South Minneapolis. Every non-profit organization aspires to have its own building. The image of a structure with free-span space, a sprung hardwood floor, a stage for the music, and a location for dancers to assemble is even grander for folk dance ensembles.

Just about 16 years after the establishment of the organization, the Tapestry Folkdance Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, realized this aim in September 1999. The structure has brought the dancing community together in ways they could never have anticipated and is everything they could have ever hoped for.

“Dance church was perfect. There was no sermon, no proselytizing, just a connection to a spiritual center through the act of dancing because we are all spiritual beings and spirits want to dance. It was so easy to trance out and feel liberated from mundane limitations.” – JRob Z.

Hollywood Studio of DanceGood Dance in Minneapolis

Hollywood Studio of Dance was founded by Diane Elliott Robinson in 1991 who has been a dance instructor and choreographer for more than 4 decades. In the center of north Minneapolis, on the southwest corner of West Broadway and Penn Avenue, sits the nonprofit, artistic Hollywood Studio of Dance. It has been an honor for Hollywood Studio of Dance to give economically underprivileged children and their families the chance to take part in performing arts activities.

As a continual reminder of the achievement, the dancers of Hollywood Studio of Dance have attained, the local and national performance medals are clearly displayed in the big viewing windows at the front of the building. The Hollywood Studio of Dance was established on the principle that learning to dance may have a good impact on a young person’s life by helping them develop their character, forge strong relationships, and establish a motivating support system away from home.
