DICK’S Sporting Goods
DICK’S Sporting Goods is a sporting goods retailer that sells athletics, outdoor recreation, fitness equipment, clothes, and footwear. Dick Stack, then 18 years old, founded DICK’S Sporting Goods in 1948 while working at an Army surplus business in Binghamton, New York. Dick, an avid fisherman, was approached by the store owner and asked to compile a list of things required to enter the fishing tackle company. The owner informed Dick he was a stupid youngster who had no idea what he was doing when Dick presented his ideas.
Dick became enraged and abruptly resigned. He went to his grandmother’s house, where he had spent a lot of his childhood, to tell her what had happened. Dick’s grandmother inquired about the expense of constructing the store on his own. Dick estimated that it would cost $300. Dick used the $300 and his unwavering work ethic to build a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. He expanded his product line in the late 1970s to include much of what you’ll find at DICK’S Sporting Goods today.
