Rancho Los Cerritos
Rancho Los Cerritos was built during the Mexican era in southern California, and it was the biggest and most beautiful adobe home ever built. The English name Los Cerritos translates to “the little hills and it was named a National Historic Landmark. Previously, the mansion served as the administrative center for a 27,000-acre ranch where sheep and cattle were the main sources of income.
The property was a portion of Manuel Nieto’s 167,000-acre Rancho Los Nietos grant, which was later divided into six sections, one of which was Rancho Los Cerritos. From 1866 through 1881, Jotham Bixby, the ranch’s manager and one of the company’s founders, lived there. Eventually, the “father of Long Beach” Jotham Bixby bought the land for himself and brought up his seven children there.

Aquarium of the Pacific

Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Gardens
Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Gardens take their name from an 1834 Mexican division of the Spanish concession Rancho Los Nietos, which covered a region in the present-day southwestern Los Angeles County and northwestern Orange County in California. Following the local Fremont Cottonwood trees, Los Alamitos translates to Little Cottonwoods or Poplars in Spanish.
The majority of what is now eastern Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, and much of Seal Beach, Cypress, Stanton, and Garden Grove are all formerly a part of Rancho Los Alamitos. In honor of its previous private owners, Bixby Ranch is another name for it. It’s completely free (though they take donations), you are freely allowed to see the animals on-site, and you get to see the amazing landscaping of the area. The only part not shown is the private tour of the ranch house, which you cannot take photos of. It’s a great place to go relax, be mindful, and enjoy the day.”
