Bluff Park
Bluff Park was first planted by the Pacific Electric Railway as a requirement for receiving the right-of-way for the rail line down Ocean Boulevard. During World War II, the Army controlled Bluff Park, outfitting it with anti-aircraft guns and restricting public access. Army structures weren’t taken down, the high board fence on Ocean Boulevard was destroyed, and walkways were rebuilt until September 1946.
Bluff Park is a passive park with few additions besides trees and vegetation. The Long Beach Art Museum Foundation rents and manages the Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House, which serves as the Long Beach Museum of Art. The carriage house was relocated from 19th Place to the edge of the cliff in 2000, and a museum gallery building was erected there in its place.

Cesar E. Chavez Park
Cesar E. Chavez Park began with a community planning process in the middle of the 1980s. The Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1992 provided the bulk of the funds for the site acquisition, which started in 1994. The Port of Long Beach provided the majority of the funding for the community center as compensation for the demolition of the recreation areas at the former Roosevelt Naval Base on Terminal Island. The area included Willmore Park, which is located at 4th Street and Golden Avenue.
Willmore Park was built in 1987 to take the place of the “temporary” park area that had been “temporarily” established along Shoreline Drive in 1977 as part of the Coastal Commission’s requirement for mitigation following the City’s invasion into the deserted Palm Beach Park for the Catalina Landing office. A City warehouse had stood on the property in Willmore Park. Willmore Park has been incorporated into Chavez Park, along with the “temporary” park area it displaced.

Scherer Park
Scherer Park was given its name on October 14, 1948, in honor of Herman J. Scherer, who served as the parks’ superintendent from June 16, 1940, until his passing on August 2, 1948. The park opened on November 10, 1959, after a development plan was authorized in May 1956. The park was improved with a lake, an overlook on Atlantic Avenue with a waterfall and a cascade, a small recreation building with an office and a small multi-purpose room, four tennis courts, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a baseball diamond, a playground, and picnic areas dotted around a quiet park.
The 2.2-acre portion of the park that Del Amo Boulevard divided from the rest of the park was leased by the City to the YMCA in 1975. On the property, the YMCA built a recreation center and pool. Later, the lease was extended till March 2, 2015.

Seaside Park
Seaside Park is situated on the old site of Seaside Hospital. Doctor A.C. Sellery, a surgeon from Toronto who relocated to Long Beach in 1906 and recognized the need for a neighborhood surgical institution, had the idea for Seaside Hospital. His financial efforts enabled the construction of the first Seaside facility, which had 18 beds, at Broadway and Junipero, as well as a 250-bed structure at 14th and Magnolia in 1913. During World War II, the hospital served as a significant blood bank and provided medical care to residents hurt in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
In 1960, Seaside Hospital went out of business and moved to 2801 Atlantic Avenue to become Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. County Supervisor Don Knabe’s actions allowed the City of Long Beach to purchase the previous County-owned property and transform it into a new park. The city of Long Beach, Community Development Block Grants, Open Space Bonds, Land and Water Conservation Fund, and a State of California Proposition 40 Youth Soccer Grant were all contributing to the park’s construction.

Wardlow Park
Wardlow Park was created by Los Angeles County and dedicated to the county in the early 1950s along with the nearby community. On January 1, 1956, Long Beach assumed responsibility for the park’s upkeep and management. The City Council adopted a park development plan on April 8, 1958. On December 3, 1958, the County Board of Supervisors changed ownership of the park.
A community leisure center with a sizable multipurpose room, a kitchen, a classroom, softball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball courts, and playgrounds are among the improvements. With money from the Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1992, baseball field lighting was installed, fields were refurbished in 1996, and playgrounds are rebuilt in 1997.
