SouthSide Early Childhood Center was initially named “day nursery,” or child care center by a team of women in 1886. SouthSide’s creators knew that offering childcare assisted more than the child. They desired to help solve the extensive issue of poverty in South St. Louis and felt the greatest way to do this was by assisting families to help themselves.
Mothers contributed five cents per day for a child to utilize the nursery. That similar day, she could earn around one dollar at work. The early Board members proudly told followers that the nursery aided these mothers to earn a living without offering compassion.
