River Legacy Parks
River Legacy Parks is the crown gem of Arlington’s park system, lying along the banks of the Trinity River in the northwestern area of the city. This 1031-acre forest floodplain park is part of a 75-mile Greenbelt parkland stretching from west Fort Worth to east Dallas. The natural, urban hardwood forest is home to 400 kinds of fauna, 193 species of birds, and 28 types of trees.
River Legacy’s four-phase master plan, published in 1986 by Sasaki and Associates, asks for much of the park to be maintained for passive activities that encourage an awareness of the area’s plant and animal life. Nature studies, bird watching, biking, jogging, picnics, and resting in nature are now educational, leisure, and recreational activities.

Nice bathroom and a cool playground area. And then 13+ miles of dirt trail for mountain biking and more serious hiking. Enjoyed an hour-long ride and a picnic there. Randol Mill Park
Randol Mill Park has an aquatic facility, a fishing lake, and other facilities for sports and leisure. The first mill was erected in 1856 by Archibald Leonard and functioned as a community center and county polling location, according to the Texas Historical Commission. The old mill was destroyed by fire in 1860, but it was rebuilt in 1862. The mill changed hands several times until being purchased by Randol in 1922.
While the mill burned down again in 1933 and was never rebuilt, the park remembering Randol’s mill and the community spirit it represented continues to thrive today. A baseball and softball complex, basketball courts, concrete and nature walks, a family aquatic facility, fishing ponds, playgrounds, and tennis courts are all part of the park.

The family and I found an old part of Randol Mill Park past the bridge near the end of the park. Vandergriff Park
Vandergriff Park is one of Arlington’s largest parks, and it features baseball fields, tennis courts, a pool, and a skatepark. Former Mayor Tom Vandergriff had a key role in attracting General Motors to the area. He was instrumental in establishing Arlington as Texas’ entertainment hub by promoting the establishment of Six Flags Over Texas and the relocation of the Texas Rangers baseball team.
From 1951 to 1977, Vandergriff served as Arlington’s mayor, and he was instrumental in transforming the city from a small community of 8,000 people to a vibrant city of nearly 400,000 people that is home to the University of Texas at Arlington, the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, a General Motors assembly plant, and a thriving tourism industry that includes Six Flags Over Texas.

F.J. “Red” Kane Park
F.J. “Red” Kane Park is a 23-acre park with a basketball court, two playgrounds, and other amenities. F.J. “Red” Kane Park was established in 1995 to recognize a real athlete who used his active and can-do attitude to affect and improve Arlington. Kane, a former NHL player, served on the Parks and Recreation Board, including as chair from 1976 to 1981.
In 1963, his work with the Jaycees led to his selection for the Arlington Parks and Recreation Board. Kane, as a member of the board, assisted in guiding the Parks and Recreation Department during a period of rapid development. A basketball court, two playgrounds, a duck pond, and open space are all part of the 25-acre park.

Bob McFarland Park
Bob McFarland Park is a park that provides outdoor recreation opportunities as well as environmental preservation measures. It provides free public space for Arlington City citizens. The operators of Bob McFarland Park also have numerous maintenance protocols in place to guarantee that the park is in good enough condition for public use.
The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to collaborate on Bob McFarland Park with the City of Arlington and the Arlington Independent School District. Arlington schools may use this park for recess and play during the school day thanks to this collaboration. Despite the fact that it is a public park, AISD has the ability to regulate access to the park during school hours for safety reasons.
