The Container Store, On July 1st Garrett Boone, Kip Tindell, and investor John Mullen opened the doors of Container Store’s first retail location. Garrett had a master’s degree in history and Kip was studying English, so neither of them had considered pursuing a career in retail but instead started working in a store that specialized solely in storage and organization.
They were excited about the idea – a concept that had never been tried before, as far as they knew. Most people thought the odd collection of industrial shelving, plastic bins, Swedish wire drawers, and other miscellaneous items would never find a customer base. Still, after 44 years and 94 stores, it’s safe to say that this crazy concept exceeded all expectations.
