Essen Bakery

Essen Bakery is a comfortable neighborhood spot where a big city can feel like a small town. They buy freshly roasted coffee beans from Elixr, their favorite local roaster. Saturdays and Sundays are busy and lively as supporters from all over the city and the country make their weekend complete with a slice of babka.

Any day of the week, you can find them making sandwiches on fresh bagels and pieces of bread, grinding espresso beans, and boxing up buttery pastries. They bake entirety from scratch every day from the finest ingredients they can find. After years of working in some of America’s most famous restaurants, Chef Tova du Plessis determined to go back to her roots when she opened her first bakery.

She took motivation from the fresh-baked bread and pastries she would make alongside her mother as a child. Her food attests to her legacy while being heavily influenced by her technical training.
