California African American Museum
California African American Museum‘s everlasting collection includes over 4,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It contains photographs, sculptures, paintings, film, historical documents, and artifacts, and it ranges from nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events.
The museum’s first purchases included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by expert Richmond Barthé and a statue by artist Maren Hassinger, then at the launch of her profession. These placed the ideal groundwork for CAAM’s command to assemble a comprehensive, thoughtful, and wide-reaching collection.
