Sevan Tosun is the man behind Design By Sevan, his business for creating amazing custom engagement rings based on the specific wishes of his clients. Sevan comes from a family of traditional Turkish jewellers and has worked hard to ensure that his is able to marry these ancient techniques with modern efficiency to deliver the perfect engagement rings for his customers.
Sevan answered some questions about his business.
How did you start your business and get where you are today?
My interest in jewellery began very early at the age of 10. After grade school I worked as an apprentice in Istanbul and learned how to set diamonds. By trade I became a diamond setter. At 22 years old I moved to Canada and got a job working with experienced skilled jewellers where I set diamond rings. After working years setting diamonds, I realized I would much rather work with people in creating the ring of their dreams rather than behind the scenes. I wanted to meet the people whose ring I was setting.
How have you made sure that you continue traditional jewellery making and meet the demands of the modern market?
By keeping the business in the family. I am a third-generation jeweller and have been following the market and trends since I was a child, learning about jewellery design and craftsmanship. Jewellery making has come a long way and as with everything technology has impacted and changed the way we make jewellery. I continue to ensure each piece is unique and has been handmade and set and inspected.
How do you ensure the quality of the diamonds you use?
By hand selecting high-quality, conflict free materials and working with the expertise of third generation jewellers in Toronto.
How long does it take you to complete a custom engagement ring?
Typically, it would take anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks depending on the complexity of the design and ring.
The process involves a consultation to ensure both the client and I understand what is expected. A 3D cad design of the piece is made and upon approval from client the piece is cast in gold and diamonds are set. Each piece is handmade to be worn for years to come.
What are some of your plans to expand your services into the future?
I am currently working on delivering pieces outside the scope of engagement rings. I would love to design and produce extravagant big pieces using various gemstones and materials.
What advice would you give anyone who was interested in creating custom jewellery?
Understanding of the process and working with someone they have connected with and can trust to make that piece they are envisioning.
