Little Sisters of the Poor relays the story behind the establishment of the nursing home. It was a group named Little Sisters of the Poor headed by Jeanne Jugan that started reaching out to the poor folks of Philadelphia. They started their noble work helping the less privileged on August 24, 1869 fist focusing on central Philadelphia initially then expanding to the Germantown area.
