The Pyramid Club

The Pyramid Club

The Pyramid Club is located in the East Village of Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1979, the Pyramid Club NYC helped define the East Village gay and drag scene in the 80’s.

In the early 80’s, the struggling artists, actors, musicians, and drag queens who lived in the East Village created their own, more intimately-scaled scene. The club became a hangout for drag performers like Lypsinka, Lady Bunny, and RuPaul, whose first New York City show was at the Pyramid Club NYC in 1982. On Labor Day 1985, Pyramid performer Lady Bunny hosted the Wigstock Festival in Tompkins Square Park. Andy Warhol and Debbie Harry dropped in the Pyramid to do a feature on the club for MTV, and Madonna appeared at her first AIDS benefit at the club. Both Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers played their first New York City concerts at the Pyramid Club NYC.

REVIEWS:

“You never know when your last dance at the club will be!! If you had this thought throw it out, the crowd was 21-55 years old. The music was legit 70’s through 90’s with a good variety of all three decades. We got there at midnight having walked from our hotel 3 blocks away. The liquor prices can cause sticker shock however, it seems consistent with the area. Yes , it is up a flight of stairs but it is only tough to navigate up and down with a 5 inch heel. This is a low key club, dress up or down, we dressed up and had a blast!” -Kimberly Edmondson
