Spanish Pond Trailhead
Spanish Pond Trailhead is situated across from the entrance to Fort Caroline National Memorial and is open from dawn to nightfall, every day. Five hundred Spanish soldiers parade four days through the marsh, forest tangle, fierce winds, and heavy rainfall to an cantonment near here.
This is potentially where Menendez and his men camped, weary and worn out, the night before the strike and capture of Fort Caroline. Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail
Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail is a 100-foot wide Right-of-Way presently expanding about 14.5 miles from Imeson Road in Jacksonville to the Town of Baldwin. A 12’ wide paved trail presently occurs for bikers, hikers, and roller-bladers to have fun. An horseman trail parallels the paved trail. The ROW is level and passes through rural areas with prosperous plant life, wildlife, and trees.
In August 1990, the City of Jacksonville applied to the Department of Environmental Protection for the accession of an abandoned railroad corridor. In December 1992, the uninhibited railroad corridor was purchased from CSX Transportation Inc., through the Florida Greenways and Trails Program. This trail is segment of a nationwide, federally initiated “Rails to Trails” program planned to turn abandoned railroad lines into linear parks.
