Burke’s Book Store is one of the country’s oldest independent bookstores, located in the heart of midtown Memphis’ Cooper-Young district. Burke’s has been offering the best assortment of new, used, and rare books in Memphis since 1875. Burke’s Book Store, which has withstood the Great Depression and two World Wars, began as a family business in 1875 and has been run by the same family for three generations.

Burke’s Book Store was founded by Walter Burke Sr. at 180 N. Books, newspapers, slates, and tin toys were sold on Main Street early after the Civil War. In 1911, Walter Burke Jr. purchased the business, and in 1946, he added public and parochial textbooks to the inventory. In 1958, William Burke took over the business from his father and began selling used and ancient books.
