“Our first time to visit…we attended a reception, followed by a musical in the theater. The facility was excellent. Valet parking was extremely well run, entering and exiting although expensive..,but other parking very close. Security on entering was plentiful and quick. The theater itself was impressive and well presented. Will look forward to the next opportunity.” -Tony Ambler

“The Alley always feels like visiting old friends. The productions are always first-rate. Well written, performed and just awesome to experience. Intermission is well thought out from a refreshment standpoint. Unlike some theaters, refreshments aren’t allowed in the theater, but if ordered before the first act, they are waiting for you so no time wasted waiting in line.” -Lynn Pelletier

Wortham Theater Center is an art performance venue constructed in the 1980s funded by private individuals. It was named after Gus S. Wortham, the American General Insurance Company founder. He facilitated the company’s 20 million dollar contribution. Another donor is the Cullen Foundation with 7.5 million dollars and Brown Foundation with 6 million dollars. The move greatly reflected a joined effort of the community.

The theater delivered a refreshing atmosphere in the middle of the recession. A 437,500 square foot art oasis in Houston, it held the title of the first opera house ever built for 25 years. It houses both the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera. The Alice & George Brown Theater and the Lillie &Roy Cullen Theater comprised its two theatres. Brown Theatre has a 17000 square foot stage with 2405 capacity while the Cullen Theatre is relatively smaller. With its smaller area, it proved to be advantageous to soloists, chamber music and small recitals and shows.
