Goodwill
Goodwill is to provide work opportunities and skills development to people with barriers to employment. Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist pastor, and early social innovator created Goodwill in Boston in 1902. Helms gathered used home goods and apparel in the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, then taught and paid the underprivileged to fix and repair the items.
The items are then either resold or donated to persons who could fix them. Goodwill Industries, according to Helms, is an Industrial program as well as a social service enterprise that provides employment, training, and rehabilitation for people with restricted employability, as well as a source of temporary aid for people with depleted resources.
