Markey’s Bar
Markey’s Bar has been a habitue in Bywater somehow for 110 years, as of 2015 beginning as the home of Standard Brewing Co. until the early 1920s when Eugene Frish put it out and opened Frish’s Cafe. (A sign still marks the spot.) This record comes from Roy Markey Jr., whose great uncle, Joe Markey, converted it into a bar in 1947. Roy’s father, Roy Sr., was an origination member of the Downtown Irish Club (along with Eddie Griffin, Jim Monaghan, and Bud Rip) back when Bywater had a large Irish-American community. Roy Jr. carries on the Irish tradition; he was a long-standing officer in the club, which although some updates retains a lot of its old neighborhood charm.
Roy’s added pub food to the offerings to comprise Buffalo wings, tacos, quesadillas, home-cut fries, an 8-oz. steak burger, and fresh-cut onion rings. There are now 27 beers on tap, with a transection of Louisiana and national craft brews. The drinks offerings are certainly draft-driven, with some premium liquors to go along with the common well drinks, and a few nice glasses of wine.

Pat O’Brien’s
Pat O’Brien ran a nightclub in the 600 block of St. Peter street in New Orleans’ French Quarter until the revoke of Prohibition. When he formally opened the bar on December 3, 1933. He made a friendship with Charlie Cantrell and after many years of fun and lots of poker games, the two men bought the building that is now home to Pat O’Brien’s Bar at 718 St Peter Street. This Historical Building was constructed in 1791 as a private home and later became the first Spanish Theatre in the United States.
It was transformed back to a private residence until 1942 when O’Brien and Cantrell acquired the spacious place to become home to one of the most symbolic nightclubs in the United States. The old bar had an upright piano to entertain, but 718 St Peter authorized them to go bigger and better with two baby grand pianos, and dueling piano entertainment was born.
