Woodward Park

Woodward Park situated three miles from downtown Tulsa surround nearly 44 acres surrounded by neighborhoods established during the 1920s and 1930s, including the Terwilleger Height Historic District, the Swan Lake Historic District, and the Maple Ridge Historic District. The Woodward Park and Gardens Historic District are registered on the National Register of Historic Places as a model of one of the finest public gardens established in Tulsa during the first half of the twentieth century, together with The Mansion at Woodward Park, a 1919 Italian Renaissance-inspired villa designed by architect Noble B. LaFortune Park

LaFortune Park, their story start in 1920 at 51st & Yale Ave. at the Tulsa County Poor Farm, where penniless people worked for their food, received health services and had a roof over their heads. But in 1935, FDR started the national welfare system, and eventually, the farm became outdated and too costly to maintain. In 1958, oilman J.A. LaFortune saw the possibility of the old farmland and donated $250,000 to Tulsa County to build a park. He did so because he “wanted to give back to the city that had been so good to me.”

LaFortune’s passion for the creation of public county parks expanded to his friend Claude Chandler, whom he convinced to donate 100 acres of his quarry for a west side park. LaFortune Park also highlights a 5k-walking/running trail that encompasses the whole park, frequently used for team building, corporate challenges, and fundraising events.

Chandler Park

Chandler Park, in 1958, Claude Chandler granted 100 acres of his quarry to Tulsa County for a west side park. This area was named the Lost City park area for years before a park. In 1961, the area is changed to Chandler Park and formally becomes the county’s second park. It was primarily used as a picnic area until the late 1960s, when a miniature golf course, baseball diamonds, and tennis courts were added. Today it has 192 acres of wooded area, various features, and amenities that include amazing panoramic views of Tulsa and Sand Springs, OK.

River West Festival Park

River West Festival Park, committed in 2009, 41st Street Plaza is an exciting, family-friendly relaxation destination with multiple interactive water features, a playground, picnic areas, a covered pavilion, restrooms, and a river overlook. The $2.8 million Plaza was privately-funded in its entirety, with Tulsa-based QuikTrip Corporation as the biggest provider in honor of the company’s 50th anniversary, its employees, and their families.

The Festival Park is situated on the west bank of the river at 2100 South Jackson Avenue and covers over 15 acres of open space with infrastructure designed to adapt medium-to-large events such as festivals, corporate gatherings, sports events, and concerts. The property highlight a river overlook/performance platform framed by the downtown skyline, a playground, restroom, and an events storage/office building. Significant parking is accessible, with overflow parking located west of Jackson.

Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness

Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness provides miles of winding dirt trails and two large ponds, features that date back long before the land was purchased for public usage. The main parking lot, restroom, and trailhead are situated at 67th and South Elwood. Nearby are three covered pavilions that are accessible on a first-come, first-served basis, plus children’s climbing boulders. Two of the park’s bronze wildlife statues, “Rio Grande Turkeys” and “Rocky Mountain Bighorn” enhance the entrance. The landscape creates a feeling of being far from city life, with visitors surrounded by a thick canopy of trees including native Post and Blackjack Oak, Hickory, Redbud, and other species.

This area of River Parks extends north-south from I-44 to 71st Street, and from Elwood Avenue, east to the Arkansas River. The highest point on Turkey Mountain lies through the park’s boundaries, rising 300 feet above the river.
