Big Met Golf Course

Big Met Golf CourseBig Met Golf Course has over 6,000,000 rounds of golf that have been played at what is reportedly Ohio’s most popular golf course since it opened in 1926. Rodney C. Sutton, the sports editor of the Cleveland Press, suggested that the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Board construct a golf course in the Rocky River Valley during the “Golden Era” of golf in the early 1920s. The board was persuaded by local golf fans that the sport was expanding and that a “Pay as you play” course was necessary and would be supported.

REVIEWS:

“Great course with beautiful views. Some easier straight holes with open fairways and a few challenging par 5s to make it interesting, you’ll be back to play again. I love playing the course and pace of play has been great every time so far! Considering making this my home course since it’s not all that expensive to play. This is a lake metro park course and I think it’s the best one.” – TJ Kennedy

Little Met Golf Course

Little Met Golf CourseLittle Met Golf Course was constructed in 1924 as a temporary golf course. Prior to the inauguration of Big Met Golf Course, it was intended to pique interest and allay the desires of nervous golfers. After another seven years, the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Board chose to keep running the course due to the sustained demand for golf. Some of the tees and greens are still clearly level with the surrounding landscape. Six tees were raised and a watering system was put in place in 1982.

“Short 9-hole course, which has a consecutive trio of near identical par-3 holes. It’s quaint and easy to play. There are some good deals for greens fee too. I would recommend to golfers in the area looking for an easy and quick round. Some of the greens are fairly challenging though. Almost no hazards too, which is a major plus for beginners.” – Stetson Thacker

Mastick Woods Golf Course

Mastick Woods Golf CourseMastick Woods Golf Course offers the impression that you are in the middle of an Appalachian forest. Nearly all of the view is made up of trees and sky. Harry Burkhardt, the first golf superintendent for Cleveland Metroparks, finished the course plan before park district workers built it in 1964. To relieve the crowded situations at Big Met and Little Met Golf Courses, the 9-hole course was built. Mastick Woods Golf Course’s executive length makes it perfect for beginners, young golfers, or those seeking a leisurely round of golf.

“I enjoy going out there to play Mastick Woods. This 9 hole course plays at a Par of 31 and is tucked down in the Cleveland Metroparks. This course is both beautiful and interesting and offers golfers many par opportunities. Pace of play is important here, as it is a fairly popular course and it also has people there playing some sort of kickball golf parallel to you. It’s wild when it’s packed.” – Brett Baker

Sleepy Hollow Golf Course

Sleepy Hollow Golf CourseSleepy Hollow Golf Course is designated one of Ohio’s top five golf courses by Golfweek. Stanley Thompson, a member of the Royal Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, created the course. On land rented from Cleveland Metroparks, it debuted in 1924 as a private country club until becoming a public recreation area in 1963. The layout of the course is a traditional “out and in” design. The first holes on both nines are downhill and into the wind, making them appear shorter than their yardage may suggest. The entering holes play unexpectedly lengthy because they are uphill and into the breeze.

“Hidden gem in Cleveland metro parks. I have only had time to use the driving range but from what I saw I cannot wait to go back and play this beautiful multileveled golf course. Very busy but well-maintained.” – Nancy I

Manakiki Golf Course

Manakiki Golf CourseManakiki Golf Course includes doglegs, water hazards, up-and-down shots, back-to-back par 5 holes, short, long, tight, and open holes, as well as two canyon holes, among other challenging features. Manakiki has a lengthy history. Its name, which is thought to be a Native American word for “maple forest,” was suggested by the abundance of maple trees throughout the fairways that are flanked with trees. The 200 acres were formerly Howard Hanna’s summer home, a well-known industrialist from Cleveland. A group later purchased the land from the Willowick Club and transformed it into Manakiki Country Club.
