The Dance Institute of Washington was established by the former Fabian Barnes in 1987. Barnes established the organization with the task of enhancing the lives of underserved children in Washington, DC using the arts. Joy of Motion Dance Center • H Street (Atlas) was established in October of 1976. they have developed from a diminutive Cleveland Park studio with just three mentors to “the area’s most extensive dance establishment” (Washington Post), with 60 faculty personnel and teaching performers, 8,000 special students, 300 weekly classes, and positions in Near Northeast DC, Friendship Heights DC, and Bethesda, along with twelve schools and mating sites.
