“The Urban Chestnut is a great addition to the booming craft brew scene in St. Louis. The place is cozy, the employees seem enthusiastic, and the beer garden looks exactly like the gardens I see in Germany. All the beers have a crisp but smooth taste, especially the German beers. Since the brewer is classically trained in German beers, brews like the IPA have a sort of German twist on them. This is not a bad thing. Heavy Riff Brewing Company crafts a wide range of classic and experimental beer varieties inspired by a variety of musical influences using traditional brewing methods. Owner and brewmaster Jerid Saffell, along with Rick Hagen and Greg Meyer, established Heavy Riff in 2013. Bluewood Brewing
Bluewood Brewing is known for its one-of-a-kind artisan ales, including barrel-aged and wild fermentation ales. The name Bluewood Brewing comes from the brewers’ nicknames for their undergraduate houses, one dubbed “Ol’ Blue” and the other “Plywood,” where they made many memories and discovered their passion for craft beer. I ordered a flight with one of each of the following: Hefeweizen, Mead, Kolsh, and an IPA. All of them were the best versions of those styles of beer that I’ve had in the past. Schlafly Bottleworks
Schlafly Bottleworks, the original locally-owned independent craft brewery in Missouri, began hand-brewing authentic beers in 1991 in the backyard of the world’s largest brewer and continues to do so today as the world’s largest brewer’s backyard. The Tap Room brewpub and restaurant first opened its doors in 1991. The flagship Schlafly experience is still the original flag that was planted. “We went to Schlafly to celebrate my brother’s 30th birthday and had a great time. Tyson was a great waiter. We had beer bread and spinach artichoke dip as appetizers and both were delicious. We had a party of six adults and one child and couldn’t decide on a pizza to share so we got four pizzas. All but the four cheese. All were delicious.
