Boonzaaijer’s Dutch Bakery all started in 1999 in Colorado Springs. The bakery’s history is essentially a family story, having been founded by Stephen Boonzaaijer. Karel Hendrick III, Stephen’s father, moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1960 and opened a bakery specializing in Bavarian crème filled cakes and pastries in 1964. All of the Boonzaaijer children began helping in the family company at the age of five, as is customary in Europe, and Stephen was no exception. After spending his undergraduate years working in a bakery and learning the fundamentals of baking and decorating in the family tradition, he opted to pursue official baking instruction in the Netherlands.
