Mossman’s Coffee ShopCafe in Bakersfield

Mossman’s Coffee Shop has served Bakersfield’s most flavorful home-style meals since 1950. For three generations, the Mossman family has been serving great meals to Bakersfield residents. The cooks still utilize the same high-quality ingredients and measurements they used 70 years ago, whether it’s “Grandpa’s Secret Recipe” pancakes, made from scratch homestyle bread and cobbler, or the famous fish and chips. Rick Mossman began his career in the restaurant and catering industry.

Rick watched in amazement as his grandfather prepared meals for hundreds of people in the Civic Auditorium, which is now the Rabobank Theatre. He was even more taken aback when he saw his father feeding 7,000 people in one day in a community more than 100 miles away from Bakersfield.

REVIEWS:

“Mossman’s coffee shop and catering have been a Bakersfield staple for close to 60 years. They have a second location in the south/west, on Wible rd, south of Planz rd. Someone once described Mossman’s coffee shop as a no thrill, but excellent food coffee shop. I ordered bacon and eggs with pancakes. It was delicious. Two pancakes could feed two people, they are huge. Mossman’s is known for their delicious fish and chips, best biscuits and gravy and large pancakes.” – John H.

Umaga CafeTop Cafe in Bakersfield

Umaga Cafe first opened its doors in January of 2020. The company was formed by a husband and wife team who both work as nurses. They had to think of new ways for the company to grow while also serving as community leaders. They started by introducing their products to the community through pop-up shops, and they used the website and social media to boost their online presence and market the company.

They’re thrilled to promote and deliver quality, flavorful Philippine-sourced coffee in response to the growing demand for specialty coffee. Because of its ideal climate and rich soils in both the lowlands and the mountains, the Philippines is one of the few countries that produce all four commercially viable coffee varieties: Arabica, Liberica, Excelsa, and Robusta.

Their mission, as Bakersfield’s first Filipino coffee shop, is to provide a stylish, pleasant, and inviting neighborhood café where they can showcase flavors that most Filipinos grew up loving and enjoying. Pastries with a twist offer a refreshing change from the usual fare, and they go nicely with excellent coffee. The Umaga Café is a place that celebrates variety and brings people together to appreciate their differences and form bonds.

REVIEWS:

“Filipino cafe. Very casual, a laid-back coffee shop with Filipino specialties like ube flavored drinks and pastries. We had the Caramel Moringa Romance with coconut milk, the Calamansi Berry Refresher, Ube Marble Bread, and Black Kutsinta rice cakes. Get the Moringa with coconut milk for sure, it’s light like Japanese matcha with the right sweetness coming from the caramel and coconut. Calamansi Berry has fresh fruits and mint for light sweetness. Ube marble cake is like bread pudding, but the black Kutsinta was delightedly sweet and chewy. Vegetarian pastries and drinks, vegan milk options for drinks.” – Jenell S.

Dagny’s Coffee Company is a locally owned coffee shop on the corner of 20th and Eye Streets in downtown Bakersfield. “Dagny’s a perfect example as to why local coffee shops are so valuable. Delicious drinks. Great atmosphere. Community and Cultural space. Helpful and friendly staff. Follow them on Facebook because they have free concerts from local bands inside the establishment. Few places like this in Bakersfield. Excellent location with historical theaters and art murals nearby. If there isn’t a concert you can walk around downtown after you get your drink.” – Joshua C.

Urbane CafeGood Cafe in Bakersfield

Urbane Cafe serves fire-baked focaccia sandwiches and salads. It all began in 2003 when owner Tom Holt saw a need in the Ventura restaurant industry and decided to fill it. He was looking for a unique sandwich and a salad that would satisfy his craving for tasty meals. Because he knew that the best sandwiches began with the best bread, he built the cafe around a hearth oven.

Together, he and his friend Pete developed a bread recipe that was soft, delicious, and baked right before your eyes. But he didn’t stop there; he developed a menu based on locally sourced products, house-roasted meats, and handcrafted sauces to give each dish its own distinct flavor.

“Very clean, friendly service, and delicious food. I liked the many vegetarian options, but as I’m trying to incorporate some of the occasional bit of fish into my diet, the ahi tuna options were quite nice as well. My son had the Southwest Chicken sandwich and loved it. My Ahi Salad was also delicious.” – Kevin G.

Bonnie’s Best Cafe

Bonnie’s Best Cafe is the place to go for a cup of coffee, a scone, or a muffin in the morning, a great sandwich, soup, or salad for lunch, and a take-home casserole ready to heat and serve in the evening. Bonnie’s Best Cafe began with two unique beginnings: a sandwich and a casserole, both created by the original Bonnie. When the previous owners’ passions went on to other life adventures in October 2006, dedicated employee Laurie Watson became the proprietor of Bonnie’s Best.

Through true labor of love, Laurie Watson transformed Bonnie’s Best into the legendary tiny café known as the home of the original Best Sandwich in Bakersfield.

“The chicken salad is delicious – a bit sweet with grapes and pickles, I didn’t expect to love it, but I did. Bonnie’s is quite small inside but still manages to fit seven tables and a counter to sit at. The themed sandwiches were quaint and, of the ones I’ve had, yummy. I haven’t had a chance to try their take-home dinners, so I can’t speak to that. Prices seem pretty average for a sandwich shop. I definitely hope to eat here again.” – Sophia B.
