North Portland Bike Works
North Portland Bike Works is a community bike shop that operates on a non-profit basis. In the summer of 2001, a group of mechanics decided to create a non-profit bike shop in North Portland with the goal of teaching people how to fix their bikes. They desired to build a shop that was welcoming, accessible, and inexpensive to anyone who walked through.
Along with their retail and service shop, they created a number of after-hours workshops that educate people on how to work on their own bikes in a relaxed environment. All of their programs were, and continue to be, offered on a sliding scale to ensure that no one was turned away due to a lack of cash.
