Big John’s Alabama BBQ
Big John’s Alabama BBQ, the deceased Rev. John A. “Big John” Stephens started Big John’s Alabama Barbeque in East Tampa, Florida on 40th Street North in 1968. “Big John”, entered Tampa from Eufaula, Alabama. He with his family in drag came to the area with the objective of being an entrepreneur but most importantly a man of God. He achieved and exceeded that goal and “Big John’s” is still present today, 42 years later. Big John carry on the business for some 25 years until his demise in 1994. His death and his legacy were conquerable to many in the Bay Area.
His wife and children proceed with his legacy by furnishing good food, great customer service, and southern hospitality. He was acknowledged and awarded for his contributions to the community by the Tampa Tribune and other media outlets. His son Fred Stephens, keep the tradition and retain the business and barbeque going. Big John’s Barbeque is famous for its open-pit style barbequing and has continued this process for over 40 years.
